Sierra Rutile Limited (SRL) has officially commenced a transformative new chapter in its 50-year operational history in Sierra Leone, with a groundbreaking ceremony for the renowned Sembehun – Area 5 Project. This milestone represents the first major development under the company’s new 100% Sierra Leonean ownership by Leonoil Company Limited, demonstrating that with the right partners and vision, African capital can drive industrial growth at a global scale.
Sembehun sits atop one of the world’s largest and highest-grade natural rutile deposits. Its development is set to extend Sierra Rutile’s mine life by at least 14 years, providing jobs, infrastructure, and economic development for the people of Bagruwa Chiefdom, and the districts hosting the company’s mining concessions.
A core highlight of the event showcased SRL’s recent acquisition and relocation of the Kwale Mineral Sands Plant from Kenya marking a strategic pivot for the Sembehun Project. This pan-continental technical feat, supported by a US$ 40 million financing facility from Ecobank Sierra Leone and Ghana, has allowed the company to reduce its projected capital expenditure by a staggering 61%, bringing the project to life with a lean and accelerated model. Upon completion, Sembehun will represent a world-class mining operation producing up to 175,000 tonnes of high-grade rutile annually, securing Sierra Rutile’s long-term sustainability and global market position.
“Today, we are not just breaking ground; we are unlocking the immense value of Sembehun to deliver outcomes that go beyond corporate growth but will also create long-term value for shareholders, communities, and the nation as a whole,” said Alhaji Mohamed Babatunde Cole, Executive Chairman of Sierra Rutile Holdings Limited. “Sembehun is the bedrock of our future, ensuring that Sierra Rutile remains a leader in the global supply chain for titanium feedstock powering pigment, aerospace, and high-tech industries.”
The Minister of Mines and Mineral Resources, Hon. Julius D. Mattai, who was Guest of Honour at the event, joined SRL’s leadership and local dignitaries for the traditional Turning of the Sod and pouring of libation that followed the formal proceedings of the ceremony.
Beyond the technical achievements, the project prioritizes local partnership. To the host communities, the company reaffirmed that the project is designed to provide sustainable development and economic vitality for a generation. The ceremony also honored the strategic roles of Ecobank for their financial backing and CSL Group, SRL’s EPCM partners managing the relocation of the plant across the continent.
As the shovels officially moved the earth, Sierra Rutile has set in motion the realisation of Sembehun, an asset of global importance, that will ensure a more sustainable, profitability, and resilient future for the company in an increasingly competitive titanium feedstock market.
